U17 — the bridge year

The year the engine gets big and the stroke gets honest. U17s train harder than they ever have — with the door to U19 standing visibly open.

What This Stage Is

Between foundation and the 1V

U17 replaces the old "JV" — a label that measured years in the sport, not the athlete. U17 matches her with girls her own age, in a year built for exactly the growth she's in the middle of. The volume steps up, the technical bar rises, and the training starts to look like what the top of the club does.

It's a bridge, and bridges carry traffic: this is the year athletes discover how fast they can actually become.

What Gets Built

Consistency under load

  • The aerobic base — steady-state work that turns a promising 2K into a fast one.
  • Technical consistency — holding an early catch and clean finish at pressure, stroke after stroke.
  • Strength — twice-weekly erg and lift sessions, built for rowing bodies.
  • Race craft — head-race pacing in fall, sprint starts and mid-race moves in spring.

By the end of U17, an athlete should be able to sit in any boat in the club and hold her own — because some already do.

The Stated Pathway

The door up is open — and we say so out loud

High-performing U17 athletes are already invited to train in the U19 block, measured on ability, mindset, physicality, and trajectory against proven metrics. An athlete can race a U17 event and a U19 event at the same regatta, depending on schedule and lineups — a U17 race in the morning, a U19 race in the afternoon. Fairness is the floor; mobility is the ceiling. Nobody gets held back here — the pathway is a program, not a favor.

And this is also the year the college picture comes into focus — alumnae start calling back, and the club's recruiting record starts to feel personal. Read how that works →
